| I know it's been a while, but I've not really had much to say... I'm teaching a course in developmental psych right now at Mt. Mary... an entire semester in five weeks... whoof!
But, I received good news today and had to share! Our grant application with the NIH has been approved and so the lab has been funded for another five years! That means that I will definitely have a job here for the next few years paying at or above what I'm making now. It's a nice feeling to know that one has a job that will be around for a while.
Our application was submitted during the last cycle and it missed approval by a narrow margin so this year we are operating on savings from the previous grant year and a bit of help from the University. Had the grant missed approval this time, I would likely have begun desperately searching for a full time position somewhere to start in the fall. But, it's all good now! Let's pop the champagne!
In other news, I'll be visiting Boston at the end of June for a seminar at a publisher's expense. Hopefully I get to visit many of my friends who live out there.
In November, if all goes well, I'll be presenting research at the Fourth Joint Meeting of the Acoustical Societies of America and Japan, held in Honolulu, HI. That gets paid for by the new grant, so Viola and I will get her a ticket and we'll have a honeymoon, of sorts!
This fall I'll also be teaching the History of Psychology to UWM seniors, juniors, and grad students. At Mt. Mary I'll be teaching an Accelerated Intro Psych course and a full semester Developmental Psych course. (all the material of the full semester course, but in only 8 weeks).
I shall be busy starting in September! Whoof!
Lily is good, Viola is good (very good , Emily is good (so I hear :-p). Once I have a little spare time the alumni site and Lily's site will be back up... working on it! Really!
Later! | | |
| Well, if things go well this summer and fall, I will hopefully be presenting research at the November meeting of the Acoustical Society of America... In Hawaii!!!!!
If I can persuade myself that Lily, Viola, and I will all live through the separation, we may leave Lily with her grandparents and go to Hawaii together for the week of the conference! A honeymoon, of sorts! It would be our first long term separation from the Lily Monster and I am already consternated about it... but an 8 hour flight (combined with a potential layover somewhere and the additional cost of another seat) might make the trip hellacious for Lily, us, and every other passenger on the plane. Plus, we'd need to pay extra for all the additional gear that children require for any form of travel.
Perhaps we can persuade a few grandparents to share her a bit... a couple days with Gummy, a couple days with Nana, and a couple days with Gramma. And, hopefully, she may remember us when we return!
I'd have to find coverage for my History of Psych class for that week... or cancel class... I'm a professor now, i can do things like that! Bwah hah hah.
| Ok, late is far better than never, so I'm good.
Sorry to be a pain about the whole thing but it will make the recipients feel good about donating and probably as likely or more likely to consider doing so again in the future. Plus, it's just the right thing to do.
I'll quit my bitching now. </bitch>
Our grad student in the lab has irked me this morning... no, he's not here, but his instruction sheet for his experiment (thaat we are running for him so that he can graduate) is here and IT irks me. The second sentence: "The first 4 practice sentences will be used to familiarize you with the different types of files you will here." Leaving aside the fact that there are ONLY four practice sentences and so they are the first four, the last four, and the middle four... and leaving aside the minor error of using the number "4" rather than the word "four", which is a stylistic error but not overly problematic... the last word in that sentence is WRONG! Anyone with a high school education should be able to distinguish between "here" and "hear". Ditto for "there" "their" and "they're"; "where" "we're" and "were-"; "to" and "too" ... I could go on. My old D-land diary has a list of these sorts of annoying errors on the right-hand margin. If English is not one's native language, I can understand making such errors, but if one is a native, monligual English speaker/reader/writer there is NO excuse for not knowing the appropriate usage and/or pronunciation of the words in one's language!
Hmm, I must've had two bitch tags active... </bitch>
<mellow> There, much better.
In other news, Lily is growing big and strong. I'll hopefully have new pics of her up later today on her webpage (located at www.thelenzfamily.net).
Lily's grandmother, my mother, entered Lily in a cutest baby contest up in her home town. She used that awesome Christmas picture for the submission (it's on the above cited site, look and ye shall find)... let's hope the girl wins! The money will go towards her college fund and the toys will go to the debris-field that is our home.
Viola's iPod nano arrived. Sweet little thing!
My iSight for the lab arrived, so now I can video conference from at home or work, and when Lily and her mom are at home and I'm at work, Lily and I can video conference while we eat lunch! When geeks become parents... the new reality show!
And the Ben Franklin commemorative coins arrived... they look pretty good, although I think that Ben's face doesn't look as good as it does in many of the paintings and other art work I've seen. the backs of the coins rock, tho. Gotta get them graded, see if they grade out as perfect or not... two of my 2005 silver eagles are perfect, I'm hoping two or more of my 2006 eagles grade as perfect, too.
I may send a Tau coin in to either be graded or simply to be slabbed so it can be placed in the coin collection with the rest of the coins I have.
I guess that's it. | | |
| When you're given a gift, is it appropriate to say "Thank you?" When the gift comes from someone you've never met, should you say "thank you?" When the gift comes with no strings attached, should you say "thank you?"
I'm fucking disappointed in the whole thing.
Things will be different next time.
